As a professional actor, you know that part of growing your career means getting great audition opportunities – and with the proper marketing materials in place, you can reduce the time you spend on worrying about all the auditions you’re NOT getting and commit more time to working on your audition technique and script analysis skills for the opportunities that are flooding your inbox.
Any headshot or reel that doesn’t show you off well, is outdated, and doesn’t highlight your current castability should be removed. Your profile should contain information about what you’re currently selling and showcasing your current castability.
Anything more than this starts to look cluttered. You really don’t need more than this unless you have a super specific picture that’s highlighting something totally different, but even then, is it something you can include while still staying in this range. Keep your photos streamlined and specific. If you have too many, it confuses the casting director and looks messy. It also can come across like you don’t know what you’re selling so you’re trying to sell ALL the things.
Your reel material is your true selling point. It’s literally showcasing your acting skills so it needs to be GREAT. It’s better to have only one or two scenes uploaded that really show you off well… than a bunch of random scenes of student films you did or that one liner you had on an NBC show. Cool that you’ve worked on a few projects – but are those projects really SELLING who you are as an actor? Are they showcasing the strongest parts of your skill set? If not – there’s honestly no use for them taking up valuable space on your profile.
Make these three shifts, and you’ll be on your way to catching more casting directors’ attention in no time!
