A certified coach with almost two decades of experience in the entertainment industry. I demystify the process of how to become a working professional in the entertainment industry with tools, strategies and processes to help performers feel empowered as they build their career, hone their craft and cultivate more confidence.
Recently I’ve been asked to share the 10 lessons I’ve learned in my acting career and what I would share with my younger self.
I share a lot of my past experiences in this industry with my 1:1 clients. I get what they’re going through because I’ve BEEN THERE.
I’m grateful I get to be a part of so many amazing performers’ journeys as they build their careers and work their asses off doing something they’re SO passionate about.
And then sometimes… the empathy sets in. Because I’ve felt all the highs of getting that “You booked it!” phone call and the lows of striking out in class, getting super close and being told no 100x, and needing to validate myself because it sure as hell wasn’t coming from anybody else.
Below are a few lessons I’ve learned along the way…
It’s to honor the story and character you’ve been invited to play. Auditions are about making fans and having FUN!
Bad reps can be giving you bad advice. Also, just energetically speaking – being with a rep who isn’t helping you to the best of their ability or supporting you in a way that’s making a positive impact… is keeping you small and making you unavailable for that fantastic rep who
It does NOTHING for you to have your horse hooked to a broken wagon.
Yes, you need to focus on the craft of acting FIRST. But this is a business, and you’re the CEO, babe. You need to measure the metrics, focus on growth and challenge yourself. Take the time to invest in learning about the BUSINESS and what you need to run yours smoothly.
Stop with the crazy makeup/outfits and trying to look “cute” over what you’re castable as.
Journal, do your morning routine, go on walks, go to therapy, and prioritize YOU.
Be patient with yourself. You’re exactly where you need to be. Every small step counts and overnight successes literally do not exist.
Start writing ASAP (or something that allows you to express yourself besides acting)
When I started writing, I discovered another true passion of mine. Creating my own content (screenplays, short films, web series, feature films, etc;) was the best decision I ever made. It was so fun and rewarding, I learned SO much about the industry and storytelling from a new perspective.
Yes, you’re the vessel to bring the character/story to life. Yes, bringing your unique perspective and authenticity is necessary. But it all means nothing if it’s not rooted in the character and story. It’s ain’t about you, sweetheart. And trust me – that’s a good thing. Now you can actually discover a new level of storytelling.
Learn how to talk about what you do and market yourself (in a non-gross way). Be proud that you’re an actor and own what you do.
Get comfortable with having uncomfortable conversations and don’t let anyone make you feel bad for respecting yourself
^^^Still working on this one. All. The. Time.
