Small, consistent wins are how you build your career.
Pursuing a career in the entertainment industry can be super fun and exciting at times.
At other times… it can be super frustrating and annoying.
It’s easy to feel helpless and like you’re spinning your wheels throwing hours of effort in areas that aren’t garnering results.
Or… maybe you’re confused about where to even put your effort, so you feel like you’re just kind of floating around, waiting for a sign to point you down a clear path.
It’s easy to get discouraged and stay motivated to keep pursuing your dream.
Instead of focusing on how far you are away from your goal… do this instead….
I know… I know…. 1% a day may seem so insignificant.
But there’s no reason why you can’t at least improve 1% a day. There’s absolutely no excuse you can give yourself for not achieving that.
Unless the zombie apocalypse happens. Then you’re off the hook.
Focusing on improving 1% a day and actually achieving it is a better plan than trying to improve in larger 25% or 30% chunks in a day, getting burnt out, and then needing to re-find motivation to start all over again.
Think if you improved 1% a day over an entire month…. That’s a 30% improvement you just made.
It doesn’t matter how you grow, it just matters that you do.
Improving 1% a day can be…
🌟Reading a new script every week. There are millions of scripts available online. You can even pick your favorite scene from the script and prepare it as if it were an audition.
🎬You could start practicing a new accent. There’s tons of Youtube videos online with fun tutorials!
🌟Write a short scene that’s perfect for your branding or a character you’d dream of playing.
🎬Intentionally watch a movie or show and take notes. What are you noticing about the acting? (Pro tip: You can find a script online and after you read it, watch the film and compare. How different or similar did the scene end up from its initial draft? Based off the script, is there anything you’d do differently than the actor that was cast? What about their performance surprised you?)
📸Check out some of New York Fashion Week! You can find some of the shows to watch online and watch how the models moved down the runway. And if you can’t find the recordings, look at the pictures from. What were the makeup and clothing trends from some designers?
💃🏼Practice posing in the mirror. Instead of just being static in your poses, try them with movement. Look up JRP Alumni Sharina Gutierrez for inspiration.
📸If you’re allowed to watch reality TV, there are few shows that give an inside look into certain aspects of the business. Most recently, Making of a Model with Yolanda Hadid (Gigi and Bella’s mom), and my personal favorite, America’s Next Top Model (slightly outdated, but Tyra has littered the series with helpful tips and tricks for aspiring models.)
🎤Try a new vocal warm up or exercise.
🎹Write or compose a song for fun!
💃🏼Try out some new choreography from Youtube. Or watch a professional dance class taught by famous instructors, like Tricia Miranda. (Parents: beware some of her music does contain language, but she teaches a ton of kids classes that can be found online as well.)
🌟Put on a free virtual concert for your friends and family. Why not, right? 🙂
My performers, I’m rooting for you.
My parents, I’m here for you.
Growth can be challenging and takes time.
But growing 1% a day will get you to your goal faster than remaining inactive.
As always, let me know if there’s any way I can support you or if you have any questions 💚
