Even though it may feel like nothing’s in your control as an actor who’s trying to build your career…
There are so many things out of an actor’s control….
-Booking the job
-Winning the room
-Getting called in to audition
-Getting signed by that agent….
Your marketing materials and casting profiles are your calling card and #1 business tool. You have control over their quality and current state. Since this represents you before you even get a chance to audition or walk into a room, it needs to be GREAT. Since this is something you have control over – how can you be working towards making your marketing materials shine so you can get more auditions and stand out in a sea of talented actors?
Some questions to ask yourself:
What’s the current state of your headshots?
Do they represent who you are TODAY if you were to walk into an audition room?
Do you have reel material? Does it showcase your strengths as an actor?
Does your resume accurately reflect the training you’re engaging in when you’re not auditioning or on set? What about the rest of your life when you’re not acting?
Are your casting profiles updated and current?
Do your casting profiles represent who you are as an actor and showcase where you currently are in your career? Or do they not do you justice?
How are you showing up for your craft? How are you growing your skillset and becoming a better actor? You get to decide the type of training you engage in. And if you currently don’t have the funds to be in class or work with a coach, what can you be doing for free to still learn and grow? There’s so much free content online that you can be ingesting from Youtube videos to scripts. There’s never an excuse to not be growing your craft. Even if you only have an hour a week – you can be spending it wisely to challenge yourself.
How are you showing up for opportunities? When you are getting auditions, how are you preparing? Do you feel confident in how you approach material and cultivate character? Are you truly spending enough time memorizing and working on the character sides? Are you self-taping with a reader that builds up your confidence? Do you feel like your preparation is giving you the best shot at showing up as your best self? You get to control how you prepare for opportunities when they arise. Luck is when preparation meets opportunity. Just getting the opportunity is not enough.
Who knows you in this industry? And who LIKES you in this industry? Networking can feel weird, but if no one knows who you are and how talented you are, how can you ever expect to get opportunities to come your way? Think about any product or service you know and like… iPhone’s, Disney World, etc; They have marketing plans so that people will be aware that they not only exist but are awesome. Whether you buy the iPhone or plan a trip to Disney is not in their control, but them letting you know they’re there and inviting you to enjoy their awesomeness is. How are you going to let people know you’re here and ready? How are you going to build your team of reps and fans? Access and exposure are a massively important part of building this career path. How are you going to be seen?
How are you showing up for yourself? How’s your mindset? Is it shaky or secure? It’s up to you to build awareness around what builds your confidence and what self-sabotages it. And then make conscious decisions to not ingest what’s diminishing the strength of your mindset and personal growth. If certain people on Instagram are making you feel crappy – unfollow them. If an acting coach makes you feel like you’re not good enough and there’s no hope for you to get better (which is CRAZY) – find a coach who you trust and builds your skill set? What are you doing to take care of YOU?
