Actors – you will audition for a ton of co-star roles in your career – here are some tips to make the most our of every co-star audition opportunity.
When I work with actors, we work the heck outta co-star auditions.
How to approach these short but sweet auditions…
How to analyze the script…
And how to create a character when you’re not given much to work with.
Co-star roles are something you’ll get a lot of auditions for. Especially in the first few years of your career. And it’s important to have a preparation process that boosts your confidence.
A few of the things I remind my clients to be aware of breaking down co-star roles
It’s not your show, you’re the co-pilot of the scene. Your character is in the story to serve a very specific purpose and move the story along. Do not make a meal out of your character or try to do something crazy to “stand out” – honestly, you really want to blend into the world that’s already created.
I’ve seen a few co-star sides where 80-90% of the scene really took place in the action lines, not in the dialogue. When I’m working with clients, there’s a tendency to not pay much attention to what’s going on in the scene and the ACTIONS of the character. And instead, go straight to focusing on the few lines your character has. The action lines are there for a reason and are just as much (if not more) of a clue of who your character is. Do not skimp over them or pay them no attention. They’re included in the story and the audition for a reason.
If you’re a co-star on the HBO show Insecure or the ABC show The Goldberg’s…. You better clearly understand what the tone of each of those shows is. Both are comedies. Both are WILDLY different. If you walk into an audition for Insecure like it’s The Goldberg’s, you’re going to be missing the mark.
Your character has wants. Your character takes action to get what they want. They have a relationship with the person they’re in a scene with and the setting of the scene. Prepare this role as you would any other character. Just because you may say less doesn’t mean you’re not an important part of the story.
And above all, be authentic. Authenticity wins 🧡
